Learning a new (programming) language

There’s so much hype around Rails these days that I figured I might as well take a look at it (finally).  I checked out the examples and watched a couple of screencasts and it seems pretty cool.  I’ve dabbled with a few PHP frameworks, but so far I haven’t been particularly impressed, especially with performance; for the most part I find them to be extremely bloated and slow (in particular: Cake, Symfony, and Zend).

Anyway, before looking at Rails any further I want to get comfortable with Ruby, so I’m going to do that over the next few weeks while continuing to work on the layouts for the app I’m building.  If Rails is as great as everyone says it is, then I’ll probably experiment with it over the next few months.
